Increasing EV Charging Capacity On The Strategic Road Network
Award: Up to £3 Million
Programme: Innovate UK
Closes: 25 March 2026
Overview
The Increasing EV Charging Capacity on the Strategic Road Network competition is a funding opportunity delivered by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), with investment from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). It provides UK-registered organisations with access to up to £10 million in grant funding to develop real-world, innovative solutions that increase ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging provision for longer journeys on the Strategic Road Network (SRN) in England.
The competition aims to test and demonstrate whole-system concepts that address grid, power and operational constraints currently limiting EV charging capacity at motorway service areas (MSAs) and “cold spots” on all-purpose trunk roads. Projects must demonstrate how they will enable at least 12 EVs (primarily cars and vans) to access ultra-rapid (150 kW+) charging at one or more SRN sites, overcome infrastructure bottlenecks, and build sector capability to support wider national rollout.
Applicants are expected to deliver detailed deployment plans and demonstrate the long-term operation and customer support for their solutions beyond the funded period, as well as share insights and learnings to benefit the broader EV charging ecosystem. This competition forms part of the UK’s broader strategy to accelerate the transition to zero-emission transport and improve charging infrastructure for drivers across the country.
