The ESA Business Applications programme provides funding and expert support to businesses from any sector looking to harness space technologies  such as satellite navigation, Earth observation, satellite telecommunications, space weather, and other space-based solutions  to create new commercial services.
With applications open all year, you can submit a proposal at any time via the Call for Proposals for Downstream Applications, or apply through a Competitive Tender or targeted Thematic Call for Proposals.

Funding Stream

ESA Business Applications offers three main funding routes to turn space-enabled ideas into market-ready services:
 
  • Call for Proposals - Open all year, flexible, and non-competitive. Apply anytime for projects using space assets to deliver new services.
  • Thematic Calls - Targeted opportunities focused on specific sectors or challenges, with tailored support.
  • Competitive Tenders - Formal competitions for defined needs, with funding awarded to the strongest proposals.

Funding Details

  • Grant Size: Typically covers 50–80% of eligible project costs, depending on company size, activity type, and ESA member state rules.
  • Project Types: Feasibility studies, demonstration projects, and service pilots using space technologies such as navigation, Earth observation, or satellite communications.
  • Eligibility: Open to businesses from any sector in ESA member states (including the UK), as long as projects use space assets to deliver commercial or societal benefits.
  • Funding Body: European Space Agency – Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme.

  1. Outline Proposal - Submit a short concept for review.
  2. Full Proposal - Develop detailed plans with ESA feedback.
  3. Approval & Contract - Sign with ESA and start your project.
