Hydrogen Innovation Grants & Funding
Helping hydrogen innovators power the UK’s clean energy transition.
Secure Funding for Innovation in Hydrogen
Hydrogen is at the heart of the UK’s clean energy strategy, positioned as a key enabler for decarbonising challenging sectors such as heavy industry, transport, and heating. With the government targeting 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, the sector is rapidly advancing, and innovation is central to achieving those goals.
Innovation in hydrogen spans a wide array of technologies:
- Improving the efficiency and durability of electrolysers - PEM, alkaline, and solid oxide
- Engineering green hydrogen production methods, including electrolysis efficiency improvements and storage solutions
- Developing low-cost, high-performance catalysts to reduce dependence on platinum group metals
- Engineering hydrogen storage systems - from high-pressure tanks to solid-state hydrides and cryogenic systems
- Designing compression technology to minimise energy use and leakage
- Advancing hydrogen fuel cell systems for heavy transport sectors: buses, trains, trucks, shipping, and even aviation
- Researching materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement for pipelines, seals, and components
- Developing hydrogen combustion systems for furnaces, turbines, and engines
- Creating hydrogen-based industrial processes like ammonia synthesis, steelmaking, and glass production
- Integrating hydrogen into gas grids and designing hydrogen-ready infrastructure
- Conducting pilot trials and system integration, including hybrid renewables‑plus‑hydrogen systems
Major funding projects are helping push this innovation forward. Hydrogen Allocation Rounds (HARs) are a primary example: HAR1 in 2023 funded 11 projects totalling 125 MW, and HAR2 in 2024/25 is expected to support around ~875 MW. These allocation rounds are set to grow every year, helping the UK reach its 10 GW target by 2030.
Meanwhile, the Hydrogen Production Business Model (HPBM) offers revenue support through a CfD-style mechanism, backed by a Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement (LCHA) – the contractual framework between government and hydrogen producers. What’s next? Keep an eye on HAR3, which will be the next big revenue support in the hydrogen sector.
What Streets Innovation Can Do For You
With funding schemes and tax incentives evolving to support the UK’s hydrogen ambitions, navigating this landscape requires deep sector insight. We support technology developers, infrastructure providers, and industrial users in accessing the capital they need to scale hydrogen innovation.
Securing Hydrogen-Specific Funding
Our team monitors and supports access to hydrogen-specific funding opportunities, including the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund, the Hydrogen Production Business Model, and targeted innovation competitions under Innovate UK and UKRI.
We help you:
- Identify the most relevant funding streams for your project
- Align your application with government priorities and technical scoring frameworks
- Demonstrate commercial and environmental impact potential to maximise success rates
Whether your focus is hydrogen generation, distribution, or end-use deployment, we ensure your application speaks the language of both innovation and policy.
Maximising R&D Tax Relief
Hydrogen R&D is high-risk and capital-intensive, but it also qualifies for valuable R&D tax relief. Streets Innovation specialises in identifying hidden eligible costs, such as:
- Process engineering for electrolysis efficiency
- Advanced control systems for hydrogen safety
- Materials research to combat corrosion or hydrogen embrittlement
- Pilot trials and system integration work
We prepare claims that are technically sound, fully compliant, and audit-ready, allowing you to recover a significant portion of your innovation spend and reinvest it in scaling up.
Strategic Financial and Commercial Advisory
Beyond individual claims and applications, we help you build a business model that can attract private capital and grow sustainably. Our strategic services include:
- Financial forecasting for hydrogen tech projects
- Building investor-ready business cases
- Navigating IP, cost modelling, and market readiness
We help position your project not just for funding, but for long-term market success in the hydrogen economy.
