EnergyBattery Innovation Concept Development Round 2

Battery Innovation Concept Development Round 2

Award: Up to £25 Million

Programme: Innovate UK

Closes: 27 May 2026

Overview

The Battery Innovation Concept Development Round 2 competition is a funding opportunity delivered by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), under the Battery Innovation Programme. It provides a share of up to £25 million to support collaborative R&D projects focused on advancing battery grade material technologies for electrification.

The competition aims to accelerate the development and scale-up of UK battery manufacturing capability, particularly in strategically important areas such as material extraction, processing, and recycling of critical battery materials. It is designed to address key gaps that currently limit the UK’s ability to secure supply chains, scale production and capture greater economic value domestically.

Projects must demonstrate how their innovation will enable high-quality battery materials for large-scale manufacturing, reduce reliance on overseas processing, and support the transition from laboratory research to pilot and pre-commercial production within the UK.

By strengthening material supply chains and enabling industrial deployment, the programme aims to position the UK as a leader in sustainable, resilient and scalable battery technologies, supporting the wider electrification of transport and energy systems.
