The Return to Research Support Bursary is a UKRI funding opportunity offered by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) to support researchers who are re-establishing their academic research careers following a break. It helps researchers develop a competitive proposal for submission to the STFC fellowship scheme after time away from active research due to reasons such as caring responsibilities, long-term illness or work outside research.
The bursary provides up to £2,500 in grant funding for a period of up to six months. It can be used to cover reasonable costs associated with activities that strengthen a future fellowship application for example, conducting literature reviews, familiarising with equipment and techniques, attending scientific meetings or preparing funding proposals.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a subject within STFC’s core science remit (such as astronomy, particle physics, cosmology and related areas) and identify a UK host research group where they will undertake their bursary activities. The funding supports engagement with the host institution and related travel and care costs that enable researchers to rebuild research momentum and position themselves for fellowship success.
This scheme addresses a key career development gap by enabling talented researchers to return to competitive research pipelines and contribute to long-term UK scientific excellence.
